IS IT INSPIRED, ACCURATE, AND CONSISTENT WITH THE BIBLE?
THE BOOK OF JUBILEES IS POPULAR, BUT IS IT BIBLICAL?
In this teaching, we will be testing the Book of Jubilees. This book is surging amongst believers, especially those in our walk, and is not only being used in personal study, but some are developing doctrines and theology from its pages. Many believe the Book of Jubilees should be included in our modern canon of Biblical Scripture and regard this text as not only informative but also as inspired Scripture, even going as far as to call it a “greater Genesis.” As a result, many include this book in their personal religious study, consider it authoritative for instruction and correction for believers, and build theology and doctrine from this text. 2 Timothy 3:12-17 kjv What is the book of Jubilees? Britannica explains it this way, “Jubilees, in its final form, was likely written about 100 BC, though it incorporates much older mythological traditions. Its isolationist religious spirit and its strictness led the Essene sect of Jews at Qumrān in Palestine to quote extensively from it in the Damascus Document, one of their major works. Jubilees is also closely connected with the Genesis Apocryphon, which also parallels Genesis and was favoured by the Qumrān community. Several fragments of the original Hebrew edition of Jubilees were found in the Qumrān library.” It is prudent that we test this book and the claims made about it so we too can rightly divide the Word, understand and preach the true Gospel of the Kingdom, and bring people into right faith in and discipleship to our Messiah Yeshua and the God of the Bible, YHVH. If the Book of Jubilees is tested and verified, we should hold to it as a part of the Torah since its writing is an extension of Genesis and Exodus. In that manner, we should accept its instruction as trustworthy, its commands as binding, and its words as divinely inspired. However, if it fails the test, we must reject it as Scripture. Not just the Book itself but also those “teachers” who build doctrine upon it. If proven false, any supposed teacher who relies on Jubilees for instruction and doctrine must be approached with caution, avoided, and, at times, even publicly opposed. This teaching will not discuss some important topics within the Book of Jubilees debate. For example, we will not discuss calendars, history, or claims regarding who accepts or does not accept Jubilees as inspired Scripture. We will only test for contradictions between the Book of Jubilees and the Bible. Jubilees is 50 chapters; therefore, we will not be able to cover every contradiction; we will explore a few concerning categories, review examples from the text, and, in the end, draw a conclusion based on the text alone.
